As theatre critic for The Village Voice in the 1960s, Michael Smith was instrumental in the growth of Off-Off-Broadway. He received a Brandeis University Creative Arts Citation for criticism, a Rockefeller Foundation Award for playwriting, an Obie Award for directing, and two Indie Awards for stage lighting. Dating from 1965 to 1974, these eleven plays premiered at La Mama ETC and Theatre Genesis in New York, the Changing Scene in Denver, and Center Stage Theater in Santa Barbara. This volume, the first of two, contains “More! More! I Want More!,” “The Next Thing,” “A Dog’s Love,” “Captain Jack’s Revenge,” “Country Music,” “Denver Trilogy” (Peas, Double Solitaire, A Wedding Party), “Point Blank,” “Prussian Suite,” and “Cowgirl Ecstasy.” Also included are cast and credits, and the author’s Notes on the Plays, describing the circumstances of writing and production.
