Michael Smith’s Six Stories opens with “The King and His Cats,” a fable written when the author was just shy of ten years old. The other five stories — “The Talk of Sugar City,” “Rimbaud’s Birthday,” “The Day We Almost Did It,” “A Dinner Party,” and “Thin Air” — deploy a range of styles to evoke the alienation, exhilaration, and comedy of sophisticated life on both coasts in the later decades of the 20th century. Six Stories was privately published in an edition of 100 copies and is not for sale.
